Australian government - energy made easy: the power to compare

July is price change time – are you still on a good deal?

Your prices can change at any time if you're not on a fixed price offer. However, July is the most common time for retailers to change prices.

How will I know if my retailer has changed my rates?

If your rates have changed, your retailer must tell you no later than your next bill. If you want to know sooner, call your retailer.

Price change time is also a great chance to check your plan and see if still you're happy with it or if you can find another plan that works better for you.

What to look for in an energy plan

The usage and daily supply charges will no doubt be the first things you think about, but there are other things to keep in mind. These include:

  • If there's a discount, how does it work? For example, it could be off usage charges only, or it could be off the whole bill. If the discount is conditional, do you think you can satisfy the conditions?
  • If there's a contract term or benefit period, are there any exit fees? What are the odds you'll want to cancel the contract before the end of the term or benefit period?
  • Do you want to support renewable energy by choosing a plan with GreenPower? If so, check whether the cost of GreenPower is competitive with other plans.
  • How often do you want to be billed? If you like a plan but you want more or less frequent bills, ask the retailer whether that's possible.
