Australian government - energy made easy: the power to compare

What can your retailer do for you?

26 June 2017

Sometimes it pays to talk to your energy retailer.

One quick phone call

If comparing plans from all retailers feels too overwhelming, there is still one simple step that can help you lower your energy bills. What's that simple step? Call your current retailer and ask them if you're on their best deal.

If you've been with the same retailer for a while and haven't made any changes, any discounts you might have been getting have probably expired. A quick call to your retailer can mean they're able to move you to a cheaper plan.

Having trouble paying your energy bills?

Energy can be a significant cost for households. If you're having trouble, there is help available.

  • Talk to your retailer as early as possible. Because energy is an essential service, energy retailers must help people who are having trouble paying their bills. This could involve things like fortnightly payment plans, energy efficiency advice or entering their hardship program.
  • Call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 and speak for free to a financial counsellor. Financial counsellors can help you with all your financial concerns, not just your energy bills.
